Our first discussion group is on the 3rd Saturday of March 2017 ( the 19th ) at 4.30pm for 5.00pm I have called the Discussion Groups generally ‘Putting Words to the Spirit’. We are living in extraordinary times, in a world that is getting smaller and smaller in our perceptions. To put time aside with others to share how we are seeing things, how we are discerning the spiritual tenor of our nation, our world, seems to me to be a really worthwhile thing to be doing.
Although I will try to stimulate discussion around a topic each month, I don’t want it to be prescriptive. We are sharing what we think, and I will be working to make the group a place where people feel safe and free to express their thoughts. I welcome suggestions for topics as well. And we will have some silence and prayer also. I address the Spirit directly and personally in my spiritual practice; but others may have other suggestions of how we acknowledge the mystery as a group.
Our topic for our first group is ‘How Are You Seeing the World at the Moment, Spiritually and Otherwise? This is what I think and feel!’
Some of the things I am interested in, from which I will largely draw topics apart from suggestions from others, are:
the origins of science, art and religion
spirituality - how it is unique and different from religion
sacred texts and holy books - why they are necessary but dangerous
the sacred and the holy
Spirit and spirits
the Buddha, the Christ, and the Prophet
the universal and empirical religions
the new Atheism
the Jews and Jerusalem
the mystery of money
authority and power
mimesis and scapegoating
the death of Christ
I welcome you to these groups as part of the life of Open Sanctuary. Everyone is welcome whatever faith or tradition or none. The topic for the coming month will be posted in the Discussion Blog on the website, with some of my thoughts to stimulate thinking in preparation for the group.
