A Message from Linda Chapman, the founder of Open Sanctuary
Welcome to 2018 at Open Sanctuary
Open Sanctuary in 2018
As another year opens up before us I am conscious of the commonly heard phrase “life seems to be speeding up”. Time seems to get away on us. And it seems there is always another horizon just ahead – Christmas, Easter, that trip away or work deadline to meet. One of the things that I love about Open Sanctuary is the place the little church, and we, inhabit. The light that filters through the fold of the mountain has the quality of the numinous eternal. It re-minds me of the silent Presence at the heart of Life including in our own hearts when we turn to behold it. And so, simply to be at Open Sanctuary can be enough. The place is grace in itself.
However, we are human beings with a common need to communicate with words, with conversation, in song, prayer and meditation. It is perhaps a recognition of our common humanity inhabiting our common home, the earth, that lies at the heart of the life of OS. We are a spirited community from diverse traditions and orientations who are committed to remaining radically inclusive and open to difference. A place of porous boundaries we allow the Light to infiltrate. We respect the other and difference, however this can be challenging. Such challenge though is also a way of growth as it invites us into a deeper and more considered reflection of those biases and assumptions that can so easily ‘veil’ the dignity and truth of the other. In a world that so often tends towards violence, both gross and subtle; the violence of prejudice, judgement and a kind of sophisticated exclusion masquerading as openness, we need to have our own violence illuminated and healed. Whether Christian or Atheist, Buddhist or Deep Ecologist, at OS we hold that all life, all being has a common Centre. We come together to share in the truth of being.
And so, we invite you to come. The simplicity of OS is a restorative for the soul in what can be a busy and time-flying world. The sharing of thoughts, music, silence and friendship enlivens, uplifts and deepens friendships. The commitment to growing in contemplative consciousness and action for the good of the world is profoundly important.
We invite you to join us again, or for the first time, for our gatherings in 2018.
Ps….we also notice that both the shy and the playful emerge at OS….all are so very welcome!
We invite you to come and share in the life of Open Sanctuary. Our invitation is extended to all people of goodwill. And check our website for any coming events. http://opensanctuary.weebly.com/
